SAILI works with the public education system to enable and improve the use of data analysis as a tool for whole school improvement. We work closely with senior decision makers to ensure they can extract maximum value from the provincial education data made available and then use these insights to make well informed decisions.  

Originally focused on schools, our data analysis programme, TARGET, was born in 2012. In partnership with the Western Cape Department of Education and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, SAILI rolled the programme out to a number of schools in the Western Cape. SAILI consulted with schools to provide performance insight and to target improvement areas, including

• Retention of learners from Grade 8 through to Grade 12; 
• Improving Grade 9 systemic testing results; and
• Achieving higher rates of matric certificate and bachelor passes.

Since 2018, SAILI has been working with provincial education departments. Education departments are daily recipients of vast amounts of complex data and it differs from that of schools in its volume, content and complexity.  Our aim is to coach department data users and consumers to to

• Optimise data usage; 
• Maximise relevance of data and reports for end-users; and
• Facilitate getting the right data and reports to the right consumers

SAILI’s strength is its ability to remain impartial and identify anomalies and trends in data sets. Exposing trends and anomalies by applying a new, external lens allows education departments to make strategic and operational decisions in previously unidentified and/or unsupported areas.
