Airforce:  The Airforce offers opportunities for a broad range of young people from those who will complete apprenticeships in things like welding and electronics, through to those who will become Pilots and Officers.  To apply, you should look for advertisements in the newspaper or go to the SAAF website  in January – March after you have completed Matric.  Like our other defence units, you join as a volunteer for two years training with the Military Skills Development Unit beginning with 6 months of basic training.  Each mustering in the SAAF, also known as occupational class in the public service and trade in the technical environment of civil aviation, has requirements for specific education qualifications, additional personal attributes and a willingness to serve under the working conditions of that particular mustering.   

Members who have successfully completed their basic regimental training, receive specialist training in one of the following fields: airspace control operators, food handlers, administrative, technical and supply material support clerks, firemen, load masters (ground), load masters (air), intelligence, protection services, SA Air Force Police, technical assistants (flight line), telecommunication operators, bowser-drivers and construction machine operators.  Apprentice training is available if you have maths and physics, code 3.

Training and positions also exist for musicians, pilots (maths and physics code 4) and engineers (maths and physics code 5) who have the relevant subjects and marks at matriculation as well as the personality and physical attributes required.

Police: Police officers maintain law and order, prevent crime, investigate offences and preserve the country’s internal security. Police officers have to be loyal to the Police Service and to the country and put the safety of the public above their own personal safety.  Police are community oriented people who derive satisfaction from a meaningful career.

New recruits enter a 2 year period of training, similar to the defence forces.  12 months of this is spent at the academy and 12 months is spent working in the community.  At the completion of training, recruits are enlisted as Constables and located within one of six divisions: Support Services include financial and administrative positions, Human Resource Management, Internal Security (the camouflage uniform) – combatting violence and civil unrest, Visible Policing – less serious crimes and emergency services, Community Relationship including media and various musical bands.  The police also employee Civilian Staff under the Public Service Act to a variety of administrative functions.

The pay for police officers in not high and there is risk associated with the job however there are excellent benefits in terms of medical aid and pension fund.
