So, You Want a Career in Defence? Part 1

Are you young and fit and interested in serving in defence of you your country?  The South African Police Force, the Army, Navy and Air force all offer excellent career opportunities for you.  The defence forces have excellent job security with free education in an your area of excellence.  Service fields require that you are:

  • A South African Citizen
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Have completed Gr 12 successfully
  • Have no criminal record
  • Be willing to serve in uniform
  • Be medically fit

Apply to the Army, Navy and Air Force in FEBRUARY.   You will hear the result by SEPTEMBER.  The 2018 application form is available here.  If you are currently in Matric, you cannot apply until next year February to start in October.  This means you will have a year that you need to fill in with other activities.  You can phone an army recruiter, contact details here.    Read this website for more information on how to join.

The Police Force advertise their recruitment phases in public listings such as newspapers.  More information on their application process is available here.

Army

The SA Army provides combat ready forces.  The Military Skills Development System is a two-year voluntary service system.  Members undergo basic training and corps training during the first year and deployment during the second year.  There are many different corps available, each with focus on a specific service delivery.  These include engineering, intelligence, catering and much more.  The army prepares you for your career both in service and when you leave.

Your CV is the most important part of your application.  The focus is on educational performance, participation in sport and community involvement. Cognitive ability, motivation and determination to join the SA Army are also considered.  Applicants with a Matric Bachelor pass, above average grades and leadership potential may be selected to study at the Military Academy.  Applicants with a University Bachelor Degree can also apply for various army positions and the age limit is higher for graduates.

There is a really helpful summary of what happens during basic training here.  The stipend for basic training is R2000/ month.  After that you apply for positions in the army that have their own salaries.

Navy

The SA Navy provides a seaward military service. This is achieved through maritime operations, assistance and support operations and hydrographical services.   Like the army, the Navy offers a two year voluntary period of services.  They equip recruits with necessary skills for a career with the navy and also for general employment.  Training begins with Military training and is followed by Functional Training.

Combat applicants as well as Engineering and Technical applicants must have at least a code 4 for Maths and Physical Science (50-59%).  These applicants become Officers who are trained to lead in maritime warfare.  Finance Officers also form an important leadership function.  Officers can complete an appropriate University Degree during training.  You still need to get the required entry marks to be accepted at a university – being in the navy is not a backdoor entry!  Having a code 4 for Maths and Physics does not guarantee an offer of a place.  Out of 15 000 applications only 500 places are offered.  After academic screening, the best candidates complete a psychometric test, interview and medical before final selection.

Non-commissioned officers are responsible for much of the hands-on work and often also hold trade certificates as shipwrights, electronic fitters and mechanical fitters.

Hi Palesa, You register in March, the year after you finish matric. You won’t hear until later in the year so it is a good idea to either get a job or start some study whilst you wait. The army doesn’t require particular subjects or marks but if you want to study when you are in the army you will still need to meet the university or college requirements for the course you want to study. Some corps (areas of the army) do require maths and physics, for example Artillery, and Leadership training requires above average school grades and leadership potential. Hi, I think you might need to modify your plans a little. You can get your matric at a TVET college. You should take the speciality – Safety and Security in Society. This will be specific for your interests. Because of your age though you still might not get into the army when you finish however there will other options open to you that you don’t have now.

Hi, you do meet minimum requirements but it is unlikely you will get in without a further qualification. Go to your nearest TVET College and register for a trade. Hi, You can rewrite your two subjects or you can go to TVET college and register for a NCV (Safety and Security in Society). It will take you 3 years and is a good preparation for the army/ police and other security service careers. Either way, you should act today. Both rewrite and NCV courses will soon be full. If you want to know the nearest rewrite program to you please email me at kathsaili@gmail.com and tell me where you live.

The process is that you first apply to the military. Then if you are accepted you go to basic training. You then apply to serve in a particular corps (service area). Training is offered within that corps as determined by the needs of the army. At the moment the army is most likely to recruit young people with strong maths and physics marks. If you really want to get into the military you will be better off to go to TVET college first and get a trade and then apply. NSFAS funding is available for TVET college courses. Registration for both TVET and NSFAS is open right now.

That is a really good course in the area of your interest and the TVET college instructors say that it DOES help with applications to the army. You can apply with matric only (or matric equivalent) up until the age of 25. So you are still on track. You might also find some other options you like during your course.

Otherwise they recruit if you have a trade and you are under 22 years or other tertiary qualification and under 27 years. Your best plan will be to go to your nearest TVET college and see what they can offer you in terms of a trade. Don’t give up on the idea of studying further though. Look for a TVET College that has accommodation. Apply to the college and apply for accommodation and apply for NSFAS funding. The college will help you with all those things. As much as you can, start saving for things that you might need like transport. Hi Madeleine, I have struggled to get definite advice from the Navy about subject choice however I have heard that they preference maths and physics. You could try calling their recruitment officer directly and asking. You can apply for the navy with matric only or with a tertiary qualification. If he isn’t accepted straight out of school, he should definitely re-apply after he gets a tertiary qualification. In regards to subject change, he can change one of his subjects to physics BUT it would be very difficult to catch up the year’s work. I’m not sure that your school would allow it. If your school does allow and he really wants to do it then the best chance would be to register him with Master Maths/ Science now and start working on the Grade 10 physics curriculum for 4 hours/ week.

Hi, Congratulations on making it this far. The army doesn’t disclose its recruitment process so I don’t know when you can expect to hear but I think by September for basic training to start in October. Lots of people would like to know how to get selected. Can you tell us why you think your application was successful so far? Kath

Hi, You apply for the army after matric. You complete basic training (6 months) then you apply for a position in the army. If you are interested in medical then you’ll apply to the medical corps. You then apply for funds to study and if granted, you apply to study nursing at university. You still need to meet the usual entrance requirements but the army will pay for your study. All the best, Kath

Hi, You will hear from them by September. Your matric and CV both are considered with your application. Meanwhile you should get a job or register at TVET College for second semester. If you get an interview you don’t want to tell them you spent the year doing nothing. Hi, I think you are going to have problems with the age restriction. You need to join by age 22 and applications are closed for this year. If you get a Bachelor degree by age 26 you can apply with that, also cutting it fine at this point. You can apply to ATNS to train with them https://www.atns.com/ They have bursaries available. They do also consider CV so the extra activities will help. As he won’t hear from the Navy until later in the year I suggest he does something useful meanwhile – either gets a job, volunteers or takes a course. That way if he does get an interview he can show that he self motivated. All the best, Kath

Hi, Once accepted to army/navy, you complete 6 months of basic training and then you take a post. The army/navy will advertise positions including study positions for studying law and you can apply for those, like applying for a job. Obviously they won’t advertise if they don’t need the position filled. You can also complete your law degree first then put in a graduate application. In this case I think that they would facilitate you completing articles with them. You can call their recruitment officer and check. All the best, Kath

Following that there is a medical, fitness test and interview. I suggest that you also apply for a tertiary course or otherwise work for 2021, in case you are not selected. Even if you are selected, it will be something to put on your CV. The navy preferences pure maths and physics. All the best, Kath
