If you are too old to go back to school, I suggest you contact your local college – Ehlanzeni College, Nkangala College or Gert Sibande College. They will also do a careers assessment with you and advise you as to how to obtain a vocational matric. You can’t go into nursing without finishing matric. Otherwise you could look and see if you can train as a Home Based Carer in your area, this is a position that assists nursing sisters with home visits in your community. Check at your local clinic and ask if there is a program available.

Hi, You can study early childhood teaching without matric. Otherwise you are going to need to get matric or at least an N4 equivalent. You can ask at your local TVET College what they have to offer. Or you can ask at your local library or community centre if anyone in your area is offering adult matric. Kath

Hi Ben, Yes Westcol offer the National Vocational Certificate (NVC) in Hospitality or Office Practice. The NVC is funded by NSFAS. You start by going to the college for a careers assessement and intake test (maths and english). They will then guide you to apply for the course that is right for you. When you are accepted you apply to NSFAS for a bursary for your studies. You will gain a qualification at the same level as matric but with a career focus. It will take you 3 years.

There are learnerships listed on career planet – http://www.careerplanet.co.za/learnerships May be you will see something for you. They refresh often so keep coming back to look. Kath

Hi Caroline, As far as I understand, you will need your matric to be a fire fighter. You could go to FET College and get your matric via the National Vocation Certificate – Safey and Security in Society. You will find that the subjects are quite different to a school matric and give you insight into safety and security vocations. Once you have the matric you can look for positions to be advertised by the Fire Services and then you can apply. They will give you on-the-job training.

As you must be interested in helping people, you can look at the NQF4 Social Auxillary worker learnership with Social Development or Educare, Home Based Care or Community Development at TVET College.

Hi, There isn’t anyway for you to finish your matric now because the school system has changed. However that doesn’t mean that you can’t study further. TVET Colleges offer some NQF4 certificate courses that you would be eligible for. This is a certificate that is the equivalent study level of doing matric but it is for a particular vocation – like cooking or office management. If you want to study at University you may find that you are able to apply without matric because of your age and also if you have been working in the field and you can show that you are competent with reading and writing in English. If you tell me more about why you want to get your matric, I can give you more specific advice.

HI Rebaone, you have two options. 1. You can rewrite matric. If you didn’t pass then you are eligible to go back to school. You can otherwise look for a matric rewrite program in your area. I don’t know your province so I can’t help you with that. There are some online options if you can afford to pay. Just google “Matric rewrite online”. 2. You will need to think about why you want to study law and see if you can find another job that gives you the same things that you thought you would get from law. Like may be if you are someone who really likes people and talking you should look for a job with a lot of interaction with people.

Hi, TVETs offer courses in scarce skills – that is skills we really need in our community but not many people have. This means that as long as you finish your course you should be in a very good position to find work. Get as much work experience as you can, even volunteering. It all helps build your CV and shows an employer that you know how to behave in a workplace.

It is always hard to get your first job after graduating. It takes an average of 6 months so don’t give up yet! Plus you have moved and have no contacts. Anything you can do to build up your CV and show that you are employable will help. University gives you technical skills but it doesn’t show that you are a good person to have in a work place. Employees want to know that you will be reliable, honest, communicate well, be a team player, problem solve, be self-directed. The only way to show that is to either volunteer regularly somewhere or get an entry level job (not in IT) and get a great reference from this place focusing on you as a person (not about your skills).

Hi, NSFAS decide on who to fund based on your current academic achievement, your course of choice and your financial need. Social workers are on the scarce skills list so your course choice is good for NSFAS. As long as you can demonstrate financial need and you get an offer of a place at a tertiary institute, I would think that NSFAS will fund you. If you want to find out more though, you should ring them directly and talk through your case. Kath

Hi Tyson, it is hard to get a learnership without matric however your security qualifications are needed. There are jobs out there for you. This is a good job search website. You can also think about where you would like to work and take around your CV. If you target big employers (like Metrorail) then you will have a chance of promotion and further training. http://www.indeed.co.za/

Hi, I think you are going to need to get your matric if you want to study further in health and safety at a diploma level. There are online certificate courses available from SAMTRAC – https://www.nosa.co.za/training/top-training-courses/list-of-courses/samtrac/ I suggest you find a job listing you are interested in and see what certificates are required as a guide for what you should be doing. It can also be a good idea to get a job in a big construction company, even starting out doing laboring. Big companies offer opportunities for gaining skills and job based qualifications.

Hi, You DO have matric. Your NC(V) is the same level as a National Senior Certificate – Matric, they are both N4. Any job that requires matric, you can apply for. You can also consider studying further and getting your National Diploma in Financial Accounting or study to become a book keeper. Book keepers are in high demand.

Hi Lee, You will need to do your ABET (Adult Basic Education) levels first. ABET III is equivalent to completing Grade 9. Once you have that you can apply for ECD at college. I know it is a bit of a long road but if you are committed you will get there. Education is important and it’s worth putting in the time. If you can’t find an ABET course in your area then you can also study it through UNISA.

The minimum pass level is 3 subjects at 30% and 3 at 40%, one of which must be your home language. If you only passed 3 at 30% then you haven’t achieved your matric certificate yet. If you want to find a rewrite program please email me at kathsaili@gmail.com and tell me where you live. Otherwise you can register at your nearest TVET College for a National Vocational Certificate which is equivalent to matric. The rewrite programs are mostly free and TVET is funded by the government NSFAS bursary so it shouldn’t cost you anything.

If you have your N4 you should be able to use it for an application for a Diploma. Speak to the admissions person at the institute you want to apply to and check that they have a way of recognizing your N4. Even though it is legally equivalent to matric, some institutes don’t have the systems in place to assess applications on the basis of something other than matric. So you have to keep talking to them and reminding them you have N4.

Hi, You can do a National Certificate (Vocational) in Travel and Tourism at your nearest TVET College. The course is covered by NSFAS bursary so you won’t have to pay for it. It will take three years and give you a qualification equal to matric but with a focus on the career you want.

Hi my name is Lise. I only have grade 7 because I just could not cope at school. I did grade 8 twice and then dropped out. The pressure was to much. Im turning 17 soon, but i realy want to study further, im very interested in health and beauty can you give me some advice on how to get back on track. Where can i go to study or even try to make my grade 10. And is it possible for me to get grade 10 without doing grade 8 over again.

      Kath Morse says:

Hi Lise, You do not have to pass Grade 8 to do Grade 9 and you do not have to pass Grade 9 to do Grade 10. However you do have to pass Grade 10 to study Beauty.

You can look for an ABET course – Adult Basic Education and Training. When you have completed ABET III you have the equivalent of Grade 9. Taking a quick guess based on the literacy shown in your query, you can probably start with ABET III and not need to do ABET I and II. With ABET III you can apply for an NQF level 1 course which is the equivalent to Grade 10.

You could also possible just do Grade 10 online without completing ABET III. There are lots of really supportive online learning methods available. Check out Brainline for online learning options.

Once you have Grade 10 you can apply for Beauty Therapy NQF 2 and go from there. http://www.cct.edu.za/what/beauty-therapy/full-qualifications/beauty-therapy-itec-diploma-level-2-3/ You do need to pass Grade 10 first though.

If you want to discuss this more you are welcome to email me at kathsaili@gmail.com If you tell me where you live and whether you have access to financial support it will help me to advise you.

Hi, I don’t personally know anything about this college. It is private so you will have to be able to afford the fees up front. It is always worth it to improve your qualifications though. Just make sure you check out the payment plan carefully and understand what they are offering in terms of support. You can also ask about their results from last year.

Hi Dorecia, You need to encourage this boy to do what he can to pass Grade 9. There are options for trades at TVET colleges once you have grade 9. Trades are very practical – things you do with your hands. Probably your brother can be very good at these. But he must pass Grade 9 to get a chance at one of these jobs. Where do you stay? Kath

Hi, Did you withdraw properly or just stop going? If you properly withdrew then it doesn’t stand as a failure on your record and you are in a much better position to get help now. Did you have NSFAS funding? One way to get to work and study is to get a job with the government. You start on an entry level position and you then apply to them for funding for further studies. http://www.gov.za/about-government/government-vacancies Kath

Yes, you apply for bursaries the year before you hope to study. I think I understand that you have ABET 4 plus are now studying for matric over two years? You don’t have grade 11? I’m not sure how that’s going to work. I think some bursary organisations will not accept your application but others will. You’ll have to see for each one. You also might struggle with NSFAS funding as you won’t have a set of combined results until a couple of months after your second set of results comes out. I suggest that you phone each bursary scheme/ NSFAS that you are applying to and talk it through with them. Kath

And the other thing that I would like to know is that, is it possible to register in Gauteng while you wrote your matric in the North West province ?

Hi Katlholo, I don’t think you can upgrade/ rewrite subjects from the old syllabus anymore. Are you hoping to study further once you have your matric? If so, you might find that you do not need to pass matric now due to your age. Tertiary institutions offer a mature age exemption, meaning that because you are older you do not need to meet matric entrance requirements. They may ask you to write an entrance test and then give you some bridging subjects for your first year. UNISA definitely does this and I expect you can find other institutions who will do it also. Hi Quinton, Here are some options. 1. In the year that you turn 23 you can apply for tertiary study without meeting minimum matric requirements. You apply with a mature age exemption. You may need to write a letter of motivation in which you explain what happened with your matric, where you have been working since and why you want to become a teacher. 2. You take a national diploma at a TVET college. You can apply for NSFAS (government) funding for this. Choose something that might be helpful to teaching like office administration or public management. Once you have the diploma, if you still want to study further, you can use it to apply for a teaching degree. 3. You take another qualification that will let you work with children, like child and youth care worker or social auxillary worker. Both of these you can study with your Matric Diploma. All the best, Kath

Hi Johanna, Well done on pushing yourself to reach this dream. Don’t give up with this setback. Mature age exemption means that they you don’t have to meet the same entry requirements as young people on the basis that you completed matric years ago and now have relevant life experience. If you have just done matric now, I’m not sure if it’s going to work for you. The best idea is to phone admissions at the institute you would like to study at and discuss it with them. I have heard that some people got into teaching with a matric diploma at TUT. UNISA offer some bridging courses if they are not sure that you can manage the full work load. You can study early childhood education with a matric diploma. You can also work as a classroom assistant – although the pay isn’t great. The final option is to rewrite one or two of your subjects. If you think this could work for you, please send me your diploma: kathsaili@gmail.com and I can advise you more. All the best, Kath

I’ve managed to get my matric Senior Certificate, but it’s a combined N3 and old syllabus subjects that I passed at grade 12. What I would like to know is that, does this certificate grant me an opportunity to further my studies at institutions like UNISA, UJ and etc.

Congratulations! I think you are fine to go ahead and apply with your combined certificate. However, to be sure, ring admissions at UNISA or UJ and just check with them. All the best, Kath

    Hi Kate
My child failed Grade11 this year. First time she failed. I dont want her to repeat Grade 11 another year. Is there any way she can do her matric next year and where?

Hi Nolene, Doing Grade 11 again gives her the chance to consolidate her work. When she has strong Grade 11 foundations she will be able to go on Grade 12. I can’t think of a way for her to do Grade 12 without passing Grade 11. This is because the school grade levels are registered with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and each grade is required to be allowed to go on to the next grade. Sorry, Kath

Hi, You apply after you get your matric results. Learnerships are advertised like jobs so you look for them in the same places you look for jobs. All the best, Kath

Hi, Your best option would be the NCV at a TVET College. I’m not sure if you can get in for first semester as the year has started already but you can certainly try. You will get funding from NSFAS and the college will help you do the application. They will also help you choose subjects for your NCV. The NCV is a matric level certificate with a vocational (V) focus. That means you will learn some practical work skills as part of your matric. There is a list of colleges here: http://www.tvetcolleges.co.za/ All the best, Kath

Hi, If you study at a TVET college you will get NSFAS funding. There are no bursaries for study at private colleges. You may be able to find a learnership though. Companies advertise learnerships like they advertise jobs. If you look up the companies you are interested in you might find they advertise on their web page. All the best, Kath

Hi, I suggest you register for ABET III to start with. From there you can do the adult matric. Ask at your local community centre or library to find out where an ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) course is running in your area. All the best with your plans! Kath

Hi, You will need to start with Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET). Community centres or libraries can usually advise you where the nearest class is although I’m not sure that anything will be running under lockdown. All the best, Kath

Hi Alfred. You can do your matric at a TVET College but it will take 3 years. I would suggest trying to find an Adult Matric class; speak to your local library or community centre to complete your matric in 2021. You can study further at a TVET college like Northlink or Cape College (anything but Beauty is covered by NSFAS so you can then also apply for funding thru NSFAS. You would need to apply before the end of November 2021 and funding will be dependent on you passing Matric. All the best, Lana
