How to Apply for NSFAS

Recently a young person contacted me saying “Can you help me apply for NSFAS?  Make it simple.  What do I need to do?” I responded:

Applying for NSFAS is not simple!

It’s best to be up front about that.  However, there are some things you can do to make it less painful.

How to Apply for NSFAS Online

1. Open an email account.  Make sure you save your user name and password in a safe place.  Your phone is not a safe place.

2. Download the consent form

3. Print the consent form and fill it out.  Parents/guardians in your house must sign.
4. Make a copy of you ID and the ID of your parent(s) and guardians(s) living with you.
5. Get a recent pay advice letter or salary slip or pension advice letter for each parent or guardian living with you.  SASSA is not required and is not counted as income. If your parent(s) or guardian(s) are unemployed, you do not need to provide any income information.
6. Scan all paperwork and save in your email account or on a flash drive
7. You are now ready to apply online.  Go to www.nsfas.org.za   Do not apply via paper application.  NSFAS has a limited budget.  They do get more applications than they can fund.  They process online applications before paper applications.
8. You will need to register.  Make sure you write down the username and password you use so that you can check your status later.
9. Your name can be your username as long as no one else has the same name
10.  Your password must contain UPPER CASE LETTERS, lower case letters, numbers1234567890 and a special character !@#$%^&*()  And it must be at least 8 characters long.  Examples: SiyaG291! deWet98$  fun@Sun9
11. Once you are registered you can just follow the instructions on the NSFAS page.  Sometimes it takes a while for NSFAS to process your registration so you might need to come back another day.  Sometimes the website doesn’t work.
12. You need to be patient.  🙂  Breath in, breath out.  If it doesn’t work one day, try again another day.
Applications are open from September – November online at the NSFAS website or through your NYDA office.  NSFAS also has a second semester application period for TVET Colleges only, apply through your college.

If You Have Problems…

Contact NSFAS Share Call: 0860 067372 / info@nsfas.org.za /NSFAS website

Go to your nearest NYDA office for help.  If you are applying for a TVET College, you can also get assistance there.

Hi, If your application is complete and you got a reference number then NSFAS will request any documents needed by email. If your application is incomplete due to outstanding documents then you need to go back into your application and upload them. To upload: save the document on your device. Then click on the upload button in your application and search for your document. Select it. It should them upload. All the best, Kath

Hi Thembile, There are three possible answers. 1. If you did not register and sign a SOP (agreement) with NSFAS then you cannot continue this year. You can apply for your course and for NSFAS again to study in 2019. 2. If you did register and sign a SOP but you did not study and withdrew then you can check with NSFAS for whether they are going to fund you for second semester. 3. If you did register and sign a SOP but you did NOT withdraw then NSFAS has paid your semester fees but you have failed (as you didn’t withdraw). In this case you will loose your funding. I hope it isn’t this one. Kath

Hi, You can apply for funding when NSFAS opens in September this year. You can apply for your I.T. course now. NSFAS should reply that they have your application within a few days. However, processing your application can take much longer. It is a good idea to set some money aside for costs that you will have whilst waiting for NSFAS to resolve your application. The earlier you apply for NSFAS the quicker you will hear from them. You will need death certificates for both your parents. Kath

In terms of fault, I don’t think it can help you to know that I think it’s NSFAS’s fault. That isn’t going to turn into money for you. Hi Sinethemba, Unfortunately NSFAS will not settle your 2017 debt. If you are approved, it is only for your 2019 costs. At many institutes, this means that you will not be allowed to graduate until your debt is paid. If you have a reference number from your 2018 NSFAS application, you should go to the website and see if your SOP/ LAF is ready to sign: http://www.nsfas.org.za/content/signyourlafsop.html You can also go to the financial office at your institute to discuss a plan for paying off your 2017 debt. Your institute will be less likely to refuse you graduation if you are actively working to pay off your debt. All the best, Kath

Hi, The first SMS means that they got your application. But when they tried to process it, documents were missing. So they put your application on a waiting pile. They processed all the complete applications first. They are only contacting incomplete applications now. It is urgent that you upload the missing documents as soon as possible. All the best, Kath

I think you can add your documents via the tab at the top right of http://www.nsfas.org.za/content/ MYNSFASACCOUNT If you can’t find how to add your documents, phone or email NSFAS and ask if you can email them in. It is really important because they won’t process your application with missing documents. All the best, Kath

If you forgot your user name or password from before you need to reset it. OR if you applied through TVET and didn’t get a user name or password, you still need to reset it. I can help you with this via whatsapp. If this is your first application then you need to follow the rules for making a user name and password. The password must have 8 characters including UPPER CASE, lower case, numbers 123 and special characters )(*&^ Examples: nsFas18! or my$$$NOW or nEli987# Contact me if you are having trouble, Kath

Hi, Try logging in with your current username and password and then try new application. If you can’t manage it, you will need to contact NSFAS and ask them to help you resolve it. Sorry, Kath

    Hi
I applied for NSFAS funding this year and although my application was successful I didn’t continue studying at the institution I got accepted into at the time.I now applied for a different course at a different institution for next year. Will it affect my application if I apply for NSFAS funding again? Please note I did not sign the SOP when I received it.

    Thank you.

Hi, If you didn’t sign the SOP and withdrew from your studies without incurring a debt or a fail then you are fine to reapply. Please note that you are applying as a returning candidate so you need to use your username and password from last year. All the best, Kath

Hi, You need to provide the death certificates of your parents. You use the orphan consent form and a social worker completes it for you. Here is a link to the file – file:///C:/Users/Katherine/Downloads/NSFAS%20Declaration%20Form.pdf All the best, Kath

Hi, Parents are responsible for fees whether they want to be or not. As far as I’m aware, NSFAS don’t consider that you can be independent from your parents’ income. If you have no parents, you don’t know where your parents are or you’ve been removed from our parents by child welfare, then a social worker can complete your parent consent form. If I find out something else, I’ll let you know. All the best, Kath

Hi, NSFAS often re-open in Jan for college applications. Phone your TVET college and ask if they are expecting NSFAS to re-open. Make sure you get your college application in. If NSFAS does re-open, the college can assist you with the application in January. All the best, Kath

Hi Lindokuhle, You should de-register before you get a debt. This year you should apply for NSFAS and apply to study at the same time. May be next year you will get things to line up properly. All the best, Kath

Do I have to re- apply for nsfas if I was funded in 2019 for a higher certificate in education and I want to start a degree next year 2021. Will nsfas fund me or do I have to re- apply

    Hi Kath
Do I have to re-apply if I was funded by nsfas in 2019 for higher certificate in education. This year 2020 I did not study due to lack of space to continue with my degree. Next year 2021 I will be studying a degree qualification, my question is do I have to re-apply for nsfas or I will be funded since I was funded in 2019

my sister was doing a higher certificate in 2018 but she failed some of her modules. she did not qualify to be admitted to mainstream studies according to the prerequisites of the university. she was funded and now she wants to study with unisa, does she have to reapply , appeal or she wont be funded? she failed less than 50% modules.

Hi Lungili, You won’t need to provide payslips as part of the application process, just your parent’s IDs and your ID. If NSFAS can’t trace your parents’ employment status from the ID number then they will request additional documents from you. All the best, Kath

Hi, NSFAS have simplified the process this year. You only need your ID, and sometimes parent ID. If they want extra documents they will email you or you will see it on your online status. All the best, Kath
