Already at High School – Scholarship Opportunities

If you are already at high school SAILI cannot offer you a scholarship.  Most high school scholarship funds select in Gr 6 or 7 to commence in Gr 8.   We do this to ensure that high school education starts off well.  For a list of scholarship opportunities for Gr 6s transitioning to high school, click here.  We are aware that older learners also need opportunities.  SAILI does not provide scholarships mid high school but there are a few options out there.  The organisations that recruit during high school are listed below.  You need to contact the organisations below directly.  You cannot apply by writing to this blog page.

Mad Leadership:

Main intake is during Gr 6 for high school scholarships.   They also have additional intakes during high school. Intake opens in April.

The selection criteria is as follows:

  • Academic Excellence > 70% aggregate
  • In need of financial support for schooling fees (R13 000 and less – Gross Income per household per month)
  • Fluent in English
  • Applicants based in Gauteng, Durban, Hoedspruit, Piet Retief and Western Cape

Capitec:

Hi, Please read the information on this page for possible high school donors. SAILI does not pick up during high school. Capitec would be the best option. Also your mom can go and see the school bursar and ask to apply for a fee subsidy or exemption. She should go in January of next year. Government policy says that no learner can be excluded from school on the basis of not being able to pay fees and their are guideline in place for reducing or exempting fees.

Your family income must be under R5000 per person per month, before deductions (so if 3 people in the family that is R15 000 per month). Maths and Physics need to be above 70%. Hi, I’m really sorry to hear that you were unsuccessful at all these schools. Your biggest problem now is that you don’t have a highschool for your child. If Bergvliet High School is in your area, I suggest you apply there. They usually take late applications up to the end of term 2 (although I don’t know for sure about this year). They are also generous in taking families in financial difficulty and supportive of reducing fees. Kath

Hi Kabelo, The only way to get a scholarship to another school is to find a school in your area that are offering scholarships and apply directly to them. None of the scholarship organisations will move you, you need to move yourself. I don’t know your area so I can’t recommend where to go. Ask around and find out which schools are good and go to them and ask if they have a bursary or scholarship. All the best, Kath

Hi, If you are at a government school then your parents can apply for a fee subsidy with the school bursar. If you are taking pure maths you can apply to Capitec, Investec or MAD Leadership for a bursary. All the best, Kath

Hi Tintswalo, Being smart is about working hard, setting goals, breaking down the steps, asking questions and taking every opportunity you can find. It’s best to want these things for yourself, because they are good for you and your life plans. You can look at Investec, MAD Leadership and Capitec for bursaries. All the best, Kath

Hi Cindy-Lee, you need to apply to another school if you want to move. Most scholarships don’t move you. There is an engineering scholarship listed on this blog. You can contact them directly about their application process. All the best, Kath

I am a single mom of 3 and faced with financial difficulties to afford school fees for my daughter who is in Grade 8, a very smart and dedicated learner. Excellent in all her subjects, incl. Maths. She obtains more than 80 % in her assesments/exams. I am behind with her school fees, for both hostel and school fees. I have tried listed institutions, some are close and some have specifics that are automatically disqualifies her. Your assistance or guide shall be highly appreciated.

Hi. Our scholarship is open to learners who are in Grade 6 for their Grade 8 High school start, so unfortunately she is too late to apply for ours. When your daughter is in Gr 9, she can apply for a bursary thru Investec (we manage the application process so you can send an email to scholarships@saili.org.za in June 2021) PROVIDED she is at a SAILI school. Requirements are that applicants must have South African residency and be taking Maths and Physics. Their average should be 70%+. Family income must be less than R5000/ per person in the family and proof of income must be provided. With regards to outstanding fees, you need to make arrangements with the school and if it is a public school you can apply for exemption, speak to the bursar at the school. All the best, Lana
