Already at High School – Scholarship Opportunities

If you are already at high school SAILI cannot offer you a scholarship.  Most high school scholarship funds select in Gr 6 or 7 to commence in Gr 8.   We do this to ensure that high school education starts off well.  For a list of scholarship opportunities for Gr 6s transitioning to high school, click here.  We are aware that older learners also need opportunities.  SAILI does not provide scholarships mid high school but there are a few options out there.  The organisations that recruit during high school are listed below.  You need to contact the organisations below directly.  You cannot apply by writing to this blog page.

Mad Leadership:

Hi Nompumlelo, It is true that most opportunities are for maths and science or at least for maths. You can get some help from African Scholars Fund. When you come to tertiary there will be a lot more options if your marks are good – even without maths and science. All the best, Kath

Hi Nompumlelo, It is true that most scholarships require maths and sometimes also science. You can get a small amount of assistance from African Scholars Fund. Otherwise you will have to wait for tertiary. There is a lot of assistance available for good scholars at tertiary, even without maths and science. All the best, Kath

Unfortunately I don’t know anything about schools in KZN however I do see that your school is near Port Shepstone and Port Shepstone high has a good Bachelor pass rate, so I would recommend looking there. http://pshs.co.za/ What I do know more about though is the fee subsidy/ exemption policy which means that if you are at a government school and your mom can’t afford the fees, she can apply to have reduced fees. Hi, Please read the information on this page for possible high school donors. SAILI does not pick up during high school. Capitec would be the best option. Also your mom can go and see the school bursar and ask to apply for a fee subsidy or exemption. She should go in January of next year. Government policy says that no learner can be excluded from school on the basis of not being able to pay fees and their are guideline in place for reducing or exempting fees.

Hi, In the middle of this year your school will have applications for the Investec bursary. SAILI is the manager for that bursary. Your family income must be under R5000 per person per month, before deductions (so if 3 people in the family that is R15 000 per month). Maths and Physics need to be above 70%. Also you need a South Africa I.D. Kath

Hi Londiwe, SAILI doesn’t sponsor at private schools or in KZN. It’s good to hear that you are a hard worker. Hard work can really take you places even when your school is not the best. This page has all that I know about bursaries when you are already in high school. http://saili.org.za/website/high-school-scholarship-opportunities/ Some private schools have their own bursary funds and you can approach them directly. I suggest that you write a formal letter though. All the best.

Hi, I’m really sorry to hear that you were unsuccessful at all these schools. Your biggest problem now is that you don’t have a highschool for your child. If Bergvliet High School is in your area, I suggest you apply there. They usually take late applications up to the end of term 2 (although I don’t know for sure about this year). They are also generous in taking families in financial difficulty and supportive of reducing fees. Kath

Hi Kabelo, The only way to get a scholarship to another school is to find a school in your area that are offering scholarships and apply directly to them. None of the scholarship organisations will move you, you need to move yourself. I don’t know your area so I can’t recommend where to go. Ask around and find out which schools are good and go to them and ask if they have a bursary or scholarship. All the best, Kath
